pangea sponge - free crochet pattern

Hi everyone! It's me, Aria Lee, writing my first blog post in quarantine just like millions of other people all around the world. This is a beginner tutorial that will take you through how to make the Pangea Sponge. This lil gal works up in no time! You can use this microfiber sponge for dusting, dishes, and much more.

Let's get started!

This pattern is written in American crochet terminology.

Difficulty level: Beginner

MATERIALS

Yarn:

Bernat blanket yarn - or any other comparable microfiber yarn

Hook:

Size L 11 - 9.00mm crochet hook is ideal, 8.00mm and 10.00mm work as well

Gauge:

This item doesn't need to meet gauge. Crochet on!

Final Dimensions:

4" x 6" (approximate)

Abbreviations:

ch - Chain

sc - Single Crochet

scts - Single Crochet Thermal Stitch

Step 1: Make a slip knot.

Step 2: Ch 9, turn.

Note: This is your foundation row. This will determine how long your sponge is.

Step 3: Working in back loops only, sc into second chain from hook. Repeat 7 more times, or until end of row. Turn. (8)

Note: This row should be looser than you normally crochet, to make your thermal stitch smoother.

This is where it gets tricky. please refer to my tutorial on thermal stitch. The first row is the hardest, don't give up!

Step 4: Ch 1. *Insert hook into back loop of first single crochet stitch and through front loop of foundation chain, yo, pull up loop, draw through both loops to complete single crochet* repeat from * until row is complete. Turn. (8)

Step 5: Ch 1. Single crochet thermal stitch into all 8 stitches in this row. Turn. (8)

Step 6: repeat Step 5 eight more times, or until you reach your desired width.

And voila! If you're the type of person that always gets annoyed about old sponges (me) this is the pattern for you. You now have a sponge, duster, and general cleaner all in one!
